Duskywings seen in our county are usually Funereal or Mournful. This one does not have white fringes on the hindwing, nor does it have the dark color of the preceding, so I am uncertain of its identification. Best guesses are Horace’s and Wild Indigo.

Several hrs. in early afternoon, not visiting all areas of large park. Sun with temp’s in low 80’s. An Azure was observed laying eggs on Cimicifuga racemosa, host plant to Appalachian Azure. Silvery Checkerspots seemingly doing well this year. Satyrium hairstreaks just starting up; skippers mostly not out here, or perhaps scarce. Dogbanes in bloom, Milkweeds not just yet. Orange Sulphur & Red Admiral were added later just outside the park.

Convenience store/bank wall south of Northeast
Cecil County, MD
While checking for moths Saturday morning on the walls of a convenience store/bank (surrounded on nearly all sides by forest),
I found a Banded Hairstreak lying on its side on the concrete just in front of the bank. I touched it to see if it was dead or alive; it immediately ‘resurrected’, and flew away.
The following morning (Sunday) - about 8 a.m. — I observed a Banded Hairstreak perched vertically on the bank wall, alongside the moths.

Mt. Ashland
Jackson County, OR
Jeff Glassberg flew to Southern Oregon to participate in the annual Warner Mountains NABA Butterfly Count to be held on the 27th, in far northern California. He had a week to explore the area, so I became his butterfly companion for the trip. Lucky me! We went right straight off to the butterfly famous Mt. Ashland which is one of many excellent butterfly locales in the Siskiyou Mountains of Southern Oregon. Across the ridge to our east lies the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, which is also a very butterfly rich area. We’ll do that area another day. One could easily spend a week exploring all the different butterfly habitats in this beautiful area centered around the quaint town of Ashland, Oregon.

Jackson County, OR
Jeff Glassberg and I had a goal of finding the colony of Small Blue that is located in the ash fields east of Crater Lake National Park. The ash and pumice are the remnants of a huge volcanic eruption that created the beautiful Crater Lake. As it turned out, we each spotted about 12 Small Blues in our quest. As a diversion, I picked up pumice rocks and threw them into the creek to watch them float downstream.

Warner Mountains NABA Count - Surprise Valley Zone. The Surprise Valley is in far northeastern California and is east of the Warner Mountains.
Modoc County, CA
Jeff Glassberg, my wife Cathy, and I were assigned the Great Basin Habitat in the Surprise Valley during the annual North Warner Mountains NABA Butterfly Count. The habitat was pretty dried up. I’d say a few weeks before would have been better for this dry and arid region of the count circle. Still, we saw some pretty unusual butterflies such as lots of Sooty Hairstreaks, Becker’s Whites, and Queen Alexandra’s Sulphurs.

Modest movement of Red Admirals on the beach today. Most of them were enjoying nectar from non-native privet hedges. This site formerly had nice numbers of butterfly bushes which were favored nectar sources for many species of butterflies. These all appear to have been physically removed as part of the current non-native hysteria.

Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, about 17 miles east of the town of Ashland, Oregon. Locales worked were Little Hyatt Lake Rd, Hyatt Lake area, and Soda Mountain area
Jackson County, OR
Jeff Glassberg and I worked the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument and got our highest species tally for the trip. There is great butterfly diversity here. We were fortunate in that many hundreds of Clodius Parnassians had eclosed yesterday and this morning and they were incredibly common. I stopped counting after I counted 240 of them in just two meadow areas and one mile of road!
Jeff found and photographed a Rural Skipper just east of Little Hyatt Lake, which is considered unusual in Jackson County.
