Butterfly Driving Tour of Baldy Creek Road, Soda Mountain Road, and Mt. Ashland
Jackson County, OR
I wanted to work the mountains on the Oregon/California border by following Baldy Creek Road, then climbing up to Soda Mountain Road and finishing up at the higher Mt. Ashland. My goal was to see if Sheridan’s Hairstreak up on Mt. Ashland was out yet. Indeed they were! I saw roughly 150 Sheridan’s Hairstreaks. They were in all the gullies, roadside ditches and bald areas along Forest Service Road 20. This number was by far, the most Sheridan’s Hairstreak’s I’ve ever seen. I think some species of butterflies in Northern California and Oregon are going to have record numbers this year!

Temperatures were in the 100s, but the shade in the canyon, a couple of flowering shrubs, and one watering source for cattle offered nice places to survey for butterflies. All of the butterflies at the mud puddle were Marine Blues. I also found and Eyed Click Beetle (Alaus zunianus) at the mud.

North of the Beech Creek National Scenic Area, Ouachita National Forest
Le Flore County, OK
My oldest and I camped in the National Forest. Our planned hikes into the Beech Creek National Scenic Area were blocked by the overgrowth along the trails so what we saw was along the forest service roads. Along with the butterflies listed we also saw four Black Bears, a female Three-toed Box Turtle, and a Southern Black Racer. The bears made for an exciting camping trip!

Several stops along the Talimena Scenic Drive in the Ouachita National Forest
Polk County, AR
The morning started off rather overcast and drizzling. My son and I started off on the Oklahoma side of the scenic drive which took us up into the clouds. By noon it had cleared up a bit and we found patches of Monarda on the sides of the Arkansas section of the road. That was where the butterfly activity was at! It was my first time seeing the Diana Fritillary. The males were a bit worn but the lone female was rather fresh and spectacular to see. I also saw several unidentified skippers. I’m fairly certain that I saw the Funereal Duskywing as I’m not aware of another skipper in the area that has that bright white fringe on the hind wing.

Moon Prairie Road. Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument
Jackson County, OR
Mardon Skipper is a rarely seen butterfly. There are only a few colony sites in Southern Oregon. The Mardon Skipper Surveyor with the monument along with Dianne Keller, the NABA Coordinator with the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument NABA Count, told me about the Mardon Skipper colony on Moon Prairie Road. So I drove down that rough dirt road to the locale. I knew I found the meadow as there is a wire fence surrounding the Mardon Skipper colony there. The fence is not to keep the skippers in, but rather to keep cattle and four-wheel vehicles out. These fenced in areas are called exclosures. I saw 25 Mardon Skippers in the area around the exclosure!

Morning at Lillie Park South and late afternoon at Leonard Preserve.
Washtenaw County, MI
Returned to a spot at Leonard Preserve where I had a tentative Oak Hairstreak (Satyrium favonius) sighting a week ago. Found it again and got a better look, but only managed a blurry photo as it darted away. Near same location where Jackie Riley saw one a few years ago. One Banded Hairstreak with partial orange cap on blue spot.

While Valerie Freer and I were birding I ran across a fresh Milbert’s Tortoiseshell. I was excited to see one last year in Sullivan County and seeing one this early here in Chenango County makes me hope that it will be a good year for them. It’s been many years since my last encounter with them.

Observations made from 9:15 - 5:45. Mostly Sunny 74-80 degrees and strong N winds. Abundant Common Milkweed, and Buttonbush the main attraction today. Folded wing skipper diversity down. Also notable was not a single Hackberry specialist flying today. Wind made photography frustrating. Found one Monarch cat.
