Another perfect day for butterflying, average temperature 78 degrees with wind around 5 mph. I was out for 5.3 hours on my weekly hike of the trails that I am doing research on. I have never seen so many Monarchs on these trails. They must have just eclosed. Plenty of vining milkweed and swamp milkweed.

These are the total sightings over six days in the Wind River Range from August 2nd through August 7th. I got to take my boys (9 & 11) on their first extended backpacking trip. There were a couple of unidentified commas high up in the trees as well. The two species with numbers next to them were the only ones I saw. There were several of all the other species, but I didn’t keep track of numbers.

Conducted a thorough survey of the refuge today. Obs. made from 8:50 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunny and a high of 91 degrees. Most productive area was the butterfly garden with Joe Pye weed and NY Ironweed in bloom. A couple of the roadsides still had some blooming Com.Milkweed and Dogbane, having been cut down earlier. Silver-Spotted Skippers became abundant as the day went on with numbers likely much higher than my initial count. Little Yellows were a real challenge to chase down as per usual.Observed A Wild Indigo Duskywing ovipositing on Wild Indigo plant in the garden.

Posting today to report a rare sighting of an Ocola Skipper in northern NJ. The day was mostly overcast with periodic rain and only occasional sun, with temps in the high 70’s to low 80’s. It’s been a good year for southern migrants here with more than the usual number of Giant Swallowtails as well. Ironically I travel all over trying to find new species for my Life List and here was a lifer right outside my living room window!

This is an almost one hundred acre farm, almost every acre is pastured to a degree and/or mowed and baled. Cattle are moved daily to a different location, hence not overgrazed. Some years the butterfly numbers are well into the thousand range, mostly Cabbage Whites and Sulphurs with few skippers, late summer. Today less than two dozen.

Highway 1-92 in Melbourne, beachside in the town of Indialantic, FL
Brevard County, FL
Atalas have moved as far north as the traffic islands, planted with coontie, in-between east and west bound lanes on 1-92, beachside (barrier island side), in Melbourne, Florida. They are also populating landscaped coontie at Juan Ponce de Leon Landing beach access/parking lot in Melbourne Beach, FL (4005 South Highway A.1.A., Melbourne Beach, FL 32951). Many adults, caterpillars, and pupae can be seen at these locations. The traffic islands on 1-92 are dangerous to visit but butterflies can be viewed from the car as you drive by. The population at the beach access is a better spot for viewing, but the 1-92 spot represents the furthest north I have seen this species up to this point. Locally abundant; find the coontie plantings and you will find the atalas.

8 AM - 3 PM. Started off quite pleasant, high 70s. Got up to high 80s. Always humid, not much wind, clear skies. I stayed closer to the coast and road, rather than in the forest (hence the limited number of satyrs). Counts over 3 approximate. Counts of Salt-marsh Skipper and Gulf Fritillary are quite conservative. Not sure which species of checkered-skipper I saw - I have it listed as Common currently. Photo below.

Most notable butterfly was a Brazilian Skipper along with new eggs laid on Canna leaves and evidence of earlier caterpillar activity. This has been a big year in NJ for this immigrant from the southern U.S. There have been a number of reports of adults and immature forms from Cape May, Cumberland, Essex and now Middlesex County.
