Shaw Nature Reserve
Franklin County, MO

On Sept. 1, 2018, Chris and John Warmbrodt, who live in Franklin County, MO, photographed a Queen at Shaw Nature Reserve in Franklin County (near St. Louis). This is the first time I have heard of a Queen in the 20 years I have been a NABA member. On that same date, a woman in St. Louis County emailed a photograph of a Queen to Tad Yankoski who works at the Butterfly House in St. Louis County. She photographed the Queen at her garden in St. Louis County. The photos attached were taken by Chris Warmbrodt at Shaw Nature Reserve.

Few and sparse nectar sources but a good bloom of Florida Paintbrush looks just a week or so away. I think I might have found the first two eclosed Arogos Skippers for the fall season for this area; both were males perched high atop their own Rayless Sunflower. One flicked his wings nicely when a sweat bee approached his flower and I was able to catch the wings partially open—revealing the dorsal pattern and the animal’s sex. Other nectar sources were Tall Elephant’s Foot and morning glory which had started to close by the time I arrived. Full sun and hot; the car thermometer said 94 degrees! Yikes!

Obs. made from 10:45 till 5:30. Mostly Sunny and temps ranging from 79 to 83. Greater than usual activity for Brazilian Skippers. More evidence of breeding activity on the various Canna species than usual. Two Great Southern Whites were moving about the butterfly garden today. As far as I could discern NBG does not raise this species in their enclosed butterfly house, so I am assuming these to be southern strays. Eastern tigers included one dark female.

I had my best Monarch day of the year. I was surprised because I thought Migration was nearly over here. I had a very conservative count of 335, most of which were nectaring on New England Asters. I say conservative because I didn’t want to disturb them and only counted the ones I could see nectaring or those that passed by me heading south. In the fall, I always start from the south and work my way north. After I finished looking at the major nectar sources I stood in one spot and counted the Monarchs that migrated between me and Lake Michigan. In 10 minutes I counted 26 Monarchs (4:11pm start) that flew by.

EPerry & RWarner from 9:30a to 1:15p. Major nectar sources are Rayless Sunflower, Morning Glory, Pickerelweed, Carphephorus spp., and Liatris. We did East Loop—not much going on, then West Loop where we found the four arogos skippers—all on Rayless Sunflower excepting one on Duck Potato! Got onto Cemetery Road last and was pleasantly surprised by a good area of Liatris and a fair area; mostly holding only Palmetto Skippers but could be a spot to watch if you plan a trip out to the Creek. It got very windy at the end of the survey and cut the day short for us.
