Checking the blooming sea grapes this morning on and off produced the following list. The fulvous hairstreaks were a nice surpise! Also were 7 Faithful Beauty Moths, which folks always come in reporting that they saw a red/white/blue butterfly! Hot, humid, full sun. The rain the previous evening made it a stuffy, humid morning. James River Park
Richmond city, VA
Partly sunny, high around 80, windy. Nature Center area downriver to the rocky riverside habitat south of Belle Isle. First Harvester seen in the park — or anywhere else in Richmond — since 2013 and the only time two seen on the same day in the city. Both apparently males, skirmishing intently at altitudes up to about 20 feet. Harvesters found in floodplain forest habitat.

This survey is a portion of the annual NABA Count done at Tosohatchee WMA. Rachel and I had from the St. John’s River all the way up Powerline Road to entrance road. Survey time from 9:30a to 4pm. Major nectar was winged loosestrife, Bidens alba, pickerelweed, blue mistflower, Carolina redroot, shrubby false buttonweed, frogfruit, and Nuttall’s thistle. Eighty percent sun and dry; a good time was had by all!

The unofficial annual count of Sandy Hook butterflies has taken place on the last Thursday in June for many years. I have participated in 12 of the last 13 years’ counts. Unfortunately, none of the other regular participants were able to join me this year, so the sightings are all my observations for this year’s count. I began at 8:30 am and ended at 4:00 pm. The weather was hot (>90º F) and sunny with a slight, intermittent breeze. The years since Hurricane Sandy have been off-years at Sandy Hook, both in numbers and diversity of species, however, this year there was a significant rebound in numbers, though not in species diversity. A major part of the numbers rebound is likely due to the status of the nectar sources - the Guardian Park Privet was in full bloom as were numerous, healthy stands of milkweed. The milkweed likely benefited from a good growing season last year and a lot of rain this year and it was in full bloom, attracting large numbers of butterflies. Particularly abundant this year were American snouts and Common buckeyes as well as Summer azures. One Coral hairstreak was seen (I could not recall the location of the sumac on which they are normally found, or the numbers may have been higher). One surprise - an Eastern comma, not normally seen on Sandy Hook was observed in the campground area this year.

With Rob Santry. The Zerene Fritillary was a Glorosia, the Variable Checkerspot was a Snowberry & the Azure was an Echo Azure. We targeted Golden Hairsteak and Mariposa Copper at Oregon Caves but saw neither. The Great Artic was a bonus as it is an ‘off’ odd year for them.

I’m logging a sighting from two years ago to add it to the database since White Admiral’s appear to be uncommon in the Anchorage area. It’s unclear whether this was the same individual I saw on July 6, 2019, in the same area.

From Hwy 97 proceed 1.5 miles, Leaniras are in Sagebrush along the road. Rob Santry was disappointed in our numbers, he said we should have continued all the way down Bolam Road to the Railroad tracks to see many more! We went to Bunny Flats parking lot on Mt Shasta but could not go further as snow blocked the road. We were targeting Mariposa Copper in the meadows above Bunny Flats.
