Jackson County, OR
Took I-5 from Medford S to Exit 14, Route 66 East 2 miles to Dead Indian Memorial Hwy to Lily Glen Equestrian Park at Milemarker 18 where we saw Snowberry Checkerspot. Then 3.4 miles to Moon Prairie Road, difficult to see dirt road entrance. Moon Prairie Road is extremely rocky & a short hike will be required if not in a high clearance vechicle. The Mardon Skipper Exclosure on the left. Extreme care should be taken to protect the environment. The Variable Checkerspot was a Snowberry.

E. Tiger slightly unexpected at these sites; Coral Hairstreaks at dogbanes and just-opening orange milkweed (A. tuberosa); Red-banded HS was worn; fresh brood of E. Tailed-Blue just out, but Am. Copper not yet in summer brood there; 1 very fresh Variegated Frit., a female in site where seen in most years; good year so far for QuestionMark thus not a surprise, a fresh summer/dark form; Red Admiral also having fairly good year so far; Com. Buckeye is truly almost common all over this area, a big year for them; summer brood of Little Wood-Satyr out nicely; also a good showing of Swarthy Skipper - locally, not everywhere! - and Delaware Skippers looked fresh as can be, just out, perhaps and always good to see! Many plants, including nectar plants, in profuse bloom, and poison-ivy also very healthy all around. (Sought out Common Checkered-Skipper, but one area where seen prior years was mowed off, and also with some sort of demolition in progress. A stop was made in Kings Co. NY (Brooklyn) at Floyd Bennett Field, but rather slow so moved on to the Rockaway peninsula’s greenspaces, outer barrier beach areas & natural habitats still in fairly good shape after all these years, where I went to look. Arrived at Jamaica Bay Refuge too late in day for a thorough look around; at that latter location, such species as Amer. Snouts have been regular this year, near Hackberry trees, that is. Weather - sun & clouds & very warm.

A fantastic day butterflying. We were out for 4.75 hours with temperature starting at 79 and ending at 95. We saw a Zebra Swallowtail which is not usually seen this far north. Also saw a Tawny Emperor which is seldom seen in the forest. Tons of Painted Ladies. Fun to watch them swarm the button bush.

For the Golden Hairstreak: From Oregon Junction we went toward Oregon Caves NM & took a Forest Road off to the right at 13 miles (it was another 6 miles to the Oregon Caves NM Visitor Center, there was a sign where we turned with that mileage). We took the Fire Evacuation Route from the Visitor Center Parking Lot for the other butterflies. It took 3.5 hours to butterfly the Fire Evacuation Route from Oregon Caves NM.

Surveyed along entrance road past check-in station and loop east a short distance from 2pm to 6:45 with about 2 hours of rain in the middle. The butterflies came out when it cleared and dried up! Most everything was utilizing the blue mistflower in the roadside ditches, also winged loosestrife, prairie clover, rattlesnake master, shrubby false buttonweed, and Bidens alba. This was the most Berry’s Skippers we have seen in one short outing. EPerry & RWarner

I’m logging a sighting from two years ago to add it to the database since White Admiral’s appear to be uncommon in the Anchorage area. It’s unclear whether this was the same individual I saw on June 29, 2019, in the same area.

Perhaps it was too early for our last Copper, the Mariposa. We did not go to location for Golden Hairstreak. (From Oregon Junction go 13 miles toward OR Caves Natl Monument & turn R on Forest Rd. to Golden Chinquapin Oak. We stopped at bridge at nectar source & Oak to find it.) The Northern Blues were Anna’s Ricei per Ron Santry. Anna’s were in roadside meadows. The Great Artic was a great find in an odd year & was on the beginning of the Trail to Bigelow Lake!

There’s a trail that runs between Island Lake and Lexington Ave — I saw several Monarchs but then saw a Red-spotted Purple and took video. It wouldn’t stop and pose politely for me so the pics are just blurry little screen caps from the video.

Rachel and I went out for a day of butterfly photography and fun but the count turned pretty serious when we started seeing some rare skippers. We surveyed entrance road and the shorter loop using Crossroad. Major nectar is blue mistflower, winged loosestrife, frogfruit, Bidens alba, and Carolina redroot. Loop east also has some prairie clover (Dalea sp.) blooming in patches near the bend at the pines. Near the end of the day we reached a recently burned zone that holds a lot of promise for a fall bloom. There we found the dotted skippers, each sitting on a narrow-leafed sunflower blossom. Overcast but hot; survey from 8 am to 3:15 pm. A good time was had by all.

I arrived at 11:30 am and stayed until 2:15 pm. It was hot (86-90º F) and sunny. Entering across from Blackwell Mills Road, I looped around the wooded area toward Federal City Road following the cut paths. Shortly after arriving, I observed a fly-by of a Cloudless sulphur and decided to count the butterflies seen today, as that is a very rare sighting for me in this area. The variety of butterflies out today was amazing for this part of the park! Not only that, but I observed 25 Monarchs (including three mating pairs) and a second Cloudless sulphur on this trip.

Out from 8-10 am. The Black Hills have received a lot of rain this year. It is very green and there are several nectar sources out. The Western Pine Elfin was extremely worn. The Atlantis Fritillary was the unsilvered “hesperus” variety as I’ve found silvered ones flying in the area as well.

Road at lower elevations was not bad but at higher elevation we were glad we had high clearance in our Subura Outback with all wheel drive. It was a great choice for our back road butterflying for a month out west. We butterflied the roadsides and meadow. Johnnie spotted the Frigga Frit at 9:40 just as it was warming a bit alongside the road early on a rock. It did not provide a ventral shot. The Black Swallowtail was alongside a creek in a lush flower meadow. Habitat near the road was generally drier. I think we should have asked permission to butterfly the meadow in the campsite along the creek at lower elevation. It was too cloudy to bother by the time we came back down.

American Snout again laying eggs on the hackberry. First two AS caterpillars found today on it. This is a new caterpillar for me to see in the yard. Question Mark back for the first time in quite a while and looks like it’ll be laying eggs on the hackberry also. Summit County, UT
Based on previous reports from this road we traveled from CO to check it out. The late Spring along wtih cool temperatures probably affected our results but with little flying and lots of road traffic and ‘off road’ vehicles along with few pull off’s not occupied by camping we decided to abandon our plans. There was also a lot of forest and few meadows. Some meadows had already been destroyed by off roaders. We were excited to find Rockslide Checkerspot and Relict Frit both on our target list as reported from here earlier. They were found in a tiny meadow at a picnic site closed to camping.

Elevation 8500 - 10,000’. We found most of the butterflies on hillsides or hilltops. Lots of great habitat so we were here two days. We are submitting a photo of an unidentified woodnymph that has large spots on the hindwing in the ventral shot unlike anything in the field guides. It was warm and windy and we struggled to get decent photos of fritillaries on this nectar source in otherwise quite dry mountain terrain with little water. There were probably lots more butterflies as we watched several crawl out long enough to hang on and nectar and crawl back in. The fritillaries were much larger and more aggressive at guarding their patch making photos more difficult.

At nearby Pilot-Index Overlooked we ran through a sagebrush meadow chasing the Hayden’s Ringlet and finally got a photo! 10 of the common alpines were there also. All the others were on a hike up Clay Butte almost to the top. but there were few butterflies closer to the top at higher elevations due to the existing snow and cold temperatures. We saw 35-40 sulphurs which we could not ID as kept their distance.

Temp’s around 70 in AM with PM intermittent showers and clouds. Observation mid morning when still just cloudy. Easily saw 5 species caterpillars. Found several American Snout chrysalis on a hackberry sapling given to me by Pat Sutton last fall. They are very small perhaps 1/4” long and 1/8” to slightly wider. 2 hour visit, good diversity of species for this site. Went looking for snout but got something better: very early record of Cloudless Sulphur, normally a late summer vagrant here. Had one possible snout sighting, but got distracted by the first of three separate encounters with what I presume was the same Cloudless Sulphur individual. Never could refind the snout, but Cloudless Sulphur was still hanging around the parking area grassland when i left at 1pm.
