Instead of walking by we ventured in the mostly shady community lot. The snow square stem was in full bloom and there were Zebra Heliconias flying in the shadows. Otherwise the beginning of yet another scorching day but although not as frequent we are still getting enough rain that I don’t need to water my garden. I think we are over that 12 year drought in SE GA!

Another quick look, rain ended this survey. Some Liatris starting up on the ziz-zag just before coming to Powerline Road. Also some thistle and mistflower. A short distance north on Powerline before the rain started gave a bonanza of common skippers on mistflower and a patch of pine lilies with lots of action from Cloudless Sulphurs & Palamedes Swallowtails. We had planned to access the Woodbine Greenway Trail (a historic location for Dukes Skipper) but it was overgrown (old rail bed). Wildflowers on Hwy 17 right of way near the bridge provided a lot of butterfly activity. White Peacock was a surprise, we have only seen these on Georgia’s barrier islands and beaches. We saw it oviposting perhaps on water hyssops.

National Butterfly Center
Hidalgo County, TX

Here is a collage made up of four different photos I took of the male Silver Emperor I came across on the National Butterfly Center’s Hackberry Trail this morning. These photos demonstrate how the iridescent blue sheen that the male of this species sometimes displays, is dependent on the angle of light hitting the wings.

In photos #1 and #2 the blue sheen is not present at all. However in photo #3 there is a slight amount of the blue sheen apparent while in photo #4 there is significantly more. Why is this? Because the blue is a refractive color and needs to be viewed at just the right angle to be visible. At the perfect angle, the blue sheen would actually be visible on both wings at the same time.
