Mint fresh Red Admiral today. I called this small butterfly, a Sleepy Orange. It was very pale, and a real runt. Seen while Jeanine Apgar was visiting my gardens. I believe the pictured skipper is an Ocola with worn markings. Cloudless chrysalis here plus at least 6 Monarch caterpillars, over a dozen Black Swallowtail caterpillars and a few American Lady caterpillars. Still a good number of flowers for nectar.

As I was conducting a prescribed burn in oak woodland on our ranch, I observed 6 Goatweed Leafwings emerge (or attempt to emerge) from the leaf litter as the flames came within a foot or two where each one had been hiding (scattered about on one third of an acre). My guess is that my burn, conducted to improve pollinator habitat, did kill a few Goatweed Leafwings.

Perfect fall afternoon…sunny, light breeze at times, 65 degrees. Surprising finds after 6 straight nights of frost! The “alba” form female Sulphur is a toss up, but I’m leaning towards a Clouded Sulphur over an Orange Sulphur based on the location it was seen…typically I see more Clouded Sulphurs in that area of the trail, however the two species are notoriously difficult to distinguish in that color form…

Rockledge Gardens in Rockledge
Brevard County, FL
While on vacation in Florida, discovered a colony of Atala Butterflies at an old nursery in Rockledge. The nursery is called Rockledge Gardens and has been in existence since the 1960’s. It is located in Brevard County in Florida. The host plant, Coontie, is planted in a large bed in the parking lot. The entire lifecycle was there! In addition to over three dozen adults, there were also eggs—some with first instar caterpillars just emerging. I also found one chrysalis. This is the first year that the nursery has seen the butterflies. The Atala Butterfly is fairly rare, being thought extinct at one point. It is making a comeback! Thank You Rockledge Gardens.
