Looking for checkerspots, saw just one but found good numbers of hairstreaks and coppers. A few blues were so tattered as to be unidentifiable.
Coneflower is usually attractive but I saw nothing on the flowers. Everything was going to the dogbane.

I’ve been checking two nearby locations during the past couple of weeks looking for Dorcas coppers (the local subspecies is Arctic Copper, Lycaena dorcas arcticus). They eclose late in our season in Alaska when the flight period of most other butterflies has ended. After several sunny days with 70° highs, I was very happy to find a number of Arctic coppers this evening between 6 and 6:35pm nectaring and resting on their larval host plant, shrubby cinquefoil. The count given is conservative. The coppers were mostly skittish, taking flight and hiding in the bog tangle to evade my approach, although a couple were very cooperative for photos. I also found a moose resting in the bog - thankfully not while I was poking around deep in the cinquefoil looking for the coppers.

Baxter Bog, Anchorage

Overcast, light breeze, with temperatures in the mid-sixties. After finding Dorcas coppers at this location five evenings ago, I wanted to make another visit - especially as some of them had looked worn earlier in the week and with rain in the forecast for the next several days. I didn’t have any confident sightings around the shrubby cinquefoil in the bog - possibly one that fluttered off before I got a good view - but a sluggish copper was nectaring on yarrow along the edge of an open area near the bog. While I was photographing it, a spider suddenly crawled up from under the cluster of flowers and made a grab for the butterfly. Surprisingly, the copper bolted upwards to escape, then landed at the center of the flowers and resumed its sluggish nectaring as if nothing had happened. The spider repositioned itself for another attack, but fortunately the butterfly decided to relocate to a safer yarrow plant.

Day 1 of 3 of a two-night stay for a family reunion, with about two hours of total butterflying time in the afternoon with observation, photography, and identification. Temperatures were in the low 90s and high humidity apart from when a thunderstorm rolled in bringing heavy rain and cooler temperatures. Most butterfly activity was at a patch of thistle, other wildflowers, and tall grasses near the pond by the swimming pool. Conservative counts. Brilliant sparkling blue with a semi formed white band fading into sky blue. Could not decide if this was a Red-spotted Purple or a white admiral. After consulting Jeffrey Glasberg’s field guide “Butterflies through Binoculars” I decided that this was a great example of a hybridized version of the two.

Day 3 of 3 of a two-night stay for a family reunion, with one hour of butterflying time in the morning including observation, photography, and identification. Temperatures were in the high 70s and mostly overcast with some patches of blue sky. Most butterfly activity was at a patch of thistle, other wildflowers, and tall grasses near the pond by the swimming pool. Conservative counts. The Red-banded Hairstreak was found at the forest edge beside the road.

1100-1300, 84-90F, Feels like 95-100F, S 2-5MPH, Cloud Cover 21-22%.
Field next to pines and a swamp.
Area had been burned within the past year,
It was weedy and had plenty of nectar sources.
Walked for two hours.
I was careful not to double-count anything,
so count may be somewhat conservative.

A female black swallowtail: The sighting was in our backyard, a female black swallowtail just came out of its chrysalis on a dry daylilies stem where it inhabited. The observer recalls seeing a caterpillar (about a month ago) on the dill plant in a pot next to the daylilies bush, so that caterpillar eventually must have moved to daylilies bush which provided a more protected and well shaded habitat. The weather was overcast, humid and about 82F degree temperature. The sighting was at noon.

Observation made at about 7pm in late day light while scouting out a location for shore-based beluga monitoring. Mostly sunny with wind, temperatures in low 60°s. Mourning Cloak flew up from tall grass and sedges along the mud flats beside the shore and fluttered to a different location. When I approached to try for a photo it lifted off again and flew back into a stand of brush. It’s late in our season now so the most likely sightings will be of those species that overwinter in their adult stage (Mourning Cloak, Milbert’s Tortoiseshell, Green Comma, etc.).

Portage Glacier Road (60.789737, -148.893509)

Sunny and breezy with mostly clear skies and temperatures in the 60°s. I spent nearly two hours in the late morning at Baxter Bog in east Anchorage searching the shrubby cinquefoil for Dorcas Copper caterpillars now that their flight season has ended. With much searching I found no caterpillars and just a small number of cinquefoil where the tips of the leaves had clearly been chewed. They could be pupating by now, I suppose. I also searched every sun-illuminated cottonwood tree, large stone, and stump for Green Commas (Arctic anglewing is the local subspecies). Two local friends have shown me photos of commas from their yards in the past few days so I know they have recently eclosed. I had no success finding any, though. Later in the day I spent a couple of hours looking for late season butterflies on trails near Portage Creek and long the road, again with no luck finding commas. As I walked along the road, a Morning Cloak suddenly flew up directly in front of me and sailed right over my head. I saw it settle into tall grass and wildflowers on the bank below the road, but I was unable to relocate it and get photos.

Not necessarily a super butterfly destination, but I did photograph a nice large Florida Softshell Turtle, Apalone ferox.
1000-1200, 80-87F, SE 4-10MPH, Cloud Cover 54-37% then heavy rain. Long Leaf and wire grass dominated pine flat woods. Some of the sandy dirt roads were so flooded I turned around in my 4WD Toyota Tacoma.
Georgia Coastal Plain near Alabama and Florida. Near the Flint River, just before it joins the Chattahoochee River to form Lake Seminole which empties into the Apalachicola River which empties into the Gulf. 30.800769317578197, -84.76229236228406

Sachem numbers exploded here 8/25 and continue today. (Number is a low estimate.) Yesterday, 3 Sleepy Orange arrived in the yard and have been patrolling continuously. I am hoping for some eggs on the cassia Jim D gave me last year. Amazing numbers of hummingbirds the past 4 days with the Sachems chasing the hummers off of the flowers. So funny to see this happen. At least 3 hummingbird moths in the gardens the past few days. First, hummingbird moths I have seen this year. 2 Brazilian Skippers caterpillars on canna’s.

Clear sky, high temperature in the upper fifties and light wind. With drier conditions after several cool rainy days, I checked the sunny spots in our weedy, overgrown backyard for Green Commas, but without success. A Mourning Cloak flew up suddenly from the deep grass and sailed over the fence into the neighbors’ yard.
