I walked along this trail from 10:15-12:10 on this sunny day with temps in the low 60’s. On other walks here, I’ve seen up to seven species, but today, other than a few distant white butterflies, one species predominated.

Sunny and clear, 74° with a light breeze from 6 to 7:15pm. We’re experiencing a heat wave with record temperatures for these dates in the Anchorage area peaking in the upper seventies over the coming weekend. Conditions have been exceedingly dry too, with very little rain in the past month and a half. Considering the heat, it’s surprising I didn’t have more butterflies as nectar sources were very plentiful along the hillside trail. Wood Tiger Moths were by far the most abundant Lepidopterans observed this evening. I was quite happy for my first ever sighting of a Northern Blue - perhaps odd it’s only my first since from the very limited local data it doesn’t seem uncommon. My photo is awful but the series of orange submarginal spots is unique among Alaskan blue butterfly species so helpfully diagnostic. The Arctic Blue surprised me, as I’ve typically seen them at higher elevations. Several other blues were seen but not successfully photographed or identified.

This was my first visit to this location. The Colorado River runs along one side of the park, which has many trails through wooded grassy areas, as well as along the river, a marsh and a creek. I saw many dragonflies and birds, plus two lizards, but only five butterflies, two of which were close enough to identify. Sunny, low 70’s, no wind, 11:10-12:30.

Increasingly cloudy and 74° with a light wind from 5:35 to 6:50pm. Butterflies seemed scarce considering the hot dry weather and how active this trail was a week ago. I returned a second evening in a row hoping to get better photos of a Northern Blue I saw yesterday but didn’t find one. The highlight of the evening was when I was crouching low to photograph a Mustard White and saw that she quickly oviposited on a stem. It happened so fast I missed the chance to photograph it and wasn’t sure she actually left an egg. I followed the butterfly hoping she’d oviposit again but she flew over bushes and I couldn’t keep up. Returning to the wildflower stalk she had been on, I was surprised to find a tiny egg. I’ve uploaded a close-up photo of the egg and another shot of the entire stalk with flowers and with the egg down near the bottom of the frame. When I got home I discovered that I had photographed a Greenish Blue ovipositing into a clover blossom.

Sunny and 68° at 10:45am as I started and 74° at 1:45pm when I stopped. A beautiful but very warm day to be out, and I enjoyed lots of butterfly activity. My goal was to find and photograph Field Crescents and they were quite visible and sometimes cooperative. I was also hoping for early Sulphurs so was glad to find some Clouded Sulphurs, although they were too active and wary for decent photos.

A friend was walking her dogs when she came upon an area loaded with butterflies, so she sent me a video. I hopped in my car and drove straight to the trail, counting over 200 puddling butterflies from 1-3PM. All of the Swallowtails and Fritillaries were very fresh. What a great first visit to this location!

Swarthy Skipper seems uncommon here in Bronx County, but might be a bit overlooked, and is not at all unprecedented. This was a poss. first for us at this small public garden, however. Not that many other butterflies were noted, in a short afternoon visit.

Chugach State Park, Flattop Mountain (61.10299° N, 149.68182° W)
Anchorage Municipality, AK
Sunny with a light breeze at 74° from 12:25 to 4:20pm, cooler and with occasional gusts at higher elevation. Most snow has now melted from the trail towards Flattop Mountain, although the mountain itself still has a lot of snow on the north-facing slopes and in shaded places. I hiked up Blueberry Knoll (elevation of 2,618 feet) below the mountain and spent my time on its slopes and craggy ridges. It was a pleasure to be above the tree line with alpine wildflowers and hill-topping butterflies. Conservative counts recorded for all species observed. The Old World Swallowtails were especially aggressive in chasing off any insects and other butterflies, especially the Western Whites which were hyperactively patrolling the ridge. A swallowtail flew at me several times as if to drive me away, but then resumed aerial combat with the others. Arctic Blues were seen roaming all over the slopes of the Knoll staying close to the ground and at low densities.

Baxter Bog Park, Anchorage (61.18489° N, 149.75657° W)
Anchorage Municipality, AK
Sunny and 72° from 11:40am to 12:20pm. This is a site of interest for me near our house so I’m trying to get there regularly. Today I took the bog loop trail at a near trot, though, with a horde of unrelenting mosquitos in pursuit that made my visit miserable. I ducked off the trail twice and went into the bog - less water-logged than usual because of our very dry weather - to check the shrubby cinquefoil for any signs of feeding by Dorcas Copper larvae. It might still be too early for them, as I saw no sign that any of the cinquefoil I examined had been nibbled at.

Sunny and 68° with strong wind from 10:20 to 10:50am. I would have stayed longer but the wind was discouraging butterfly activity, and those I saw were mostly hunkered down in the ground cover. Two female Greenish Blues were observed including one ovipositing, plus a worn-looking male missing patches of scales on the underside of his wings.

Sunny and 68° with mostly still conditions from 6 to 7:10pm. A beautiful evening with a Swainson’s Thrush singing throughout my session from lower down the hillside. Perfect butterfly conditions but less activity than in the past couple of weeks at this location. The flight season for Large Marbles seems to have ended here, and the remaining Milbert’s Tortoiseshells look very faded and worn. multiple 'barrens' areas, prime ones at Wilton & Ballston Spa
Saratoga County, NY
the majority of ‘Karner’ Blues were seen at Wilton, NY, with far fewer at other locations. We also stopped in to the Albany Pine Bush preserve, in county of same name, where Karners were mostly done for a 1st-brood flight. We did not visit the prime sites for poss. Mottled Duskywing. At Albany P.B. preserve, some very recent burns had temporarily changed habitats. Also seen was poss. Wild Indigo Duskywing (not in our checklist though), and a few grass-skippers too briefly to call beyond family and type, “smaller orange-based skipper sp.” Good amounts of nectaring flowers were available, including types of dogbanes, and Rubus spp. Our weather was variable, not hot, and threatened rain at times. The trip was actually over 2 days, starting on June 6 to reach 2 counties of NY. Most photos were by K. Wallstrom.
Also noted were 4 spp. of tiger beetles (Cicindelidae).

Tibbits State Forest - power line cutting
Rensselaer County, NY
This power line cutting provides a strip of xeric habitat in the middle of an otherwise moist eastern hardwood forest. Besides butterflies, nesting Prairie Warblers were in the area today. Parking access is from a well-concealed dirt road just past the Hoosac School on Pine Valley Rd. The access road has deep ruts and is not suitable for parking after rain.

Sunny, breezy, and 71° from 6 to 7pm. While experimenting with my camera and a new 55mm lens, I spotted a pair of worn Green Commas flying around the street in front of the house. I’ve been seeing a single very skittish comma there for about a week now and was happy to find tonight that there were two. Better still, they were quite approachable and I managed to get some photos even with the fairly short lens - including shots of one of the commas perched on my knee where it sat at length.

Sunny, windy, and warm with temperatures in the high sixties from 3:15 to 4:35pm. I was very happy for a Mormon Fritillary caterpillar, L6 based on appearance and length of about an inch (using Life Histories of Cascadia Butterflies, D. James and D. Nunnallee, for reference). I observed and photographed ovipositing by Greenish Blues and suspected ovipositing by Mormon Fritillaries. A very yellow sulphur with solid black borders on the dorsal wing surfaces was seen briefly a couple of times but not photographed so I was unable to identify it with confidence.

Sunny with increasing clouds, light wind, and temperature at 65° from about 12 to 2:30pm. It’s been cooler, cloudy, windy, and rainy most of the week - typical early summer weather here - so this was my first chance out for butterflies all weekend. When I visited this location three weeks ago most of it was still buried under snow. That’s mostly melted now and the area is greening, with lots of wildflowers. Considering the good conditions, butterflies were fairly scarce. After 45 minutes of seeing nothing I thought I might leave without a sighting. Activity picked up somewhat in the early afternoon, and I got good cooperation for photos.

In 2018 I discovered Mottled Duskywings at this location. In the spring of 2020 the power company totally destroyed the habitat of New Jersey Tea which bloomed along the powerline. There was nothing to see in 2020. Last year the habitat had not recovered and I did not find any Mottleds. This year the New Jersey Tea has rebounded and I was able to find two and probably three Mottled Duskywings.

Mostly cloudy with short periods of sun, breezy, and 64° from 6 to 7pm. Quiet with far more mosquitos than butterflies. I found a pristine Milbert’s Tortoiseshell vibrating its wingtips in shade to stimulate its thoracic muscles in preparation for flight activity. 2 azures seen seemed to be of northern ‘spring’ types; we don’t know if ‘cherry-gall’ spring azure types are found here so far-north, and in the boreal habitat. Kept an eye out for Jutta Arctic, which occurs here and elsewhere in a few ADK’s counties of northern NY state, but none were seen, probably a bit late for them. One Mourning Cloak was worn, not the new brood’s emergence yet. Arctic Skippers seen were not esp. worn-looking, and a highlight for both of us in this visit. Almost half of species seen appeared fresh and feisty as well. Fairly good amounts of nectar-flowers seen and used as we observed. This area may be nearing n. portions of Juvenal’s, although we had seen that duskywing in the next county north in NY, close by the US-Quebec border (at a lower elevation). Good odonate diversity on this trail too. All (lesser-quality) photos here by T.F.

Sunny with a light wind and temperature at 62° from 6:10 to 7:30pm. Sightings data for the area is light, but I was intrigued by reports from the past two years of Common Ringlets along the Coastal Trail on the west side of Anchorage during the last third of June. While I’ve seen Ringlets elsewhere in Alaska I hadn’t known they might be present here in town, and it warranted investigation. Since many of my butterfly sightings have seemed early this season, I figured I’d try at mid-month. After searching for over an hour and finding nothing but Greenish Blues, I headed back towards the car to go home. Then in tall grass a buff-colored flutter caught my eye and - I’ll be darned - I’d found a Ringlet. It was fairly worn so maybe late in it’s flight stage.

Sunny with partial clouds, 62° and breezy. Alaskan butterfly survey data from July 1965 collected by Dr. Ken W. Philip indicates Dorcas Coppers were found on the campus of Alaska Pacific University. Our house is about midway between APU and Baxter Bog, a location in East Anchorage I’ve been monitoring closely where Dorcas Coppers are present (but not yet eclosed this season at my last visit). I checked satellite imagery and found a bog on the APU campus, and then biked over there this afternoon to have a look. There’s plenty of Shrubby Cinquefoil, host plant of Dorcas Coppers, so the bog looks very promising. I’ll keep checking on it along with Baxter Bog. I saw no indication of larval activity on the leaves of the Cinquefoil but couldn’t stick with it for too long due to mosquitos and irate gulls.

Mostly sunny, windy, hot and humid…mid-90s. Slow start with literally thousands of dragonflies zipping around, but improved in the low meadows out of the wind and away from the dragonflies. Lack of nectar sources due to the dry conditions. One of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtails was a dark form female.

The 5-car parking lot at the trailhead was full, so I walked around the trails at the nearby rest area, then went back to the trailhead. The puddling spot had dried up, but many butterflies, particularly blue species, still gathered at the sunny corner on the trailhead. There were two aberrant blue butterflies.

Mostly sunny, a light breeze and a very warm 69° as I began at 6:15pm and 66° when I finished at 7:30pm. I returned to this location after my sighting of a Common Ringlet here last week to see if I could find more Ringlets. After checking the same patch of tall grass and wildflowers without success, I crossed the road and walked along the fence that borders Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. In addition to some large piles of bear scat, I found lots of Greenish Blues among the wildflowers and at least four Common Ringlets. I saw two fritillaries - one a very bright orange and the other an orange-brown - but they both flew away without pausing to be photographed for identification.

Balmy, sunny evening with a temperature of 72° as I started at 6:30pm and 71° when I finished at 7:30pm, with a light breeze. I returned to this site for a second evening in a row to spend more time observing and photographing Common Ringlets, and with the hope of getting another sighting of fritillaries I failed to photograph and identify last night. No fritillaries this evening, but I had a very pleasant time with the ringlets. My recorded count of six is conservative.

Sunny, still, and 71° with haze from a nearby wildfire from 6 to 7:15pm. I donned gumboots and stomped into the bog to check the Shrubby Cinquefoil for any early-emerging Dorcas Coppers. There was no sign of Coppers and the mosquitos were awful, but I had some very nice successes that made the countless bug bites entirely worthwhile. Very small butterflies with violet-blue dorsal wing surfaces proved to be my first Cranberry Blues of the season. I spotted a Common Ringlet bobbing across the bog at a distance. And I had some frustratingly quick glimpses of bright orange fritillaries flying low over the bog. I sloshed my way around the marsh until close enough to a few of them for identification photos and confirmed my first-ever sighting of Silver-bordered Fritillaries.

This is the composite of species from Sunday to Friday. Every day was sunny and highs of 83-93. Many species were found this year. Cabbage Whites had a massive emergence and were the most common. Little Wood-Satyrs were not far behind and were the second most abundant. Many were seen crossing the gravel road into the woods. Monarchs were down this year so far. Both visits in June, they have been lacking. Meadow Frits were almost completely gone this year and only one was found. On the upside, Buckeyes, Question Marks, and some other migrants were having a comeback. We patrolled over 90 acres of the farm.
We also were unable to find any saturniids or much of anything by the moth light. No Hackberry Emperors have been sighted here yet. About 4 years ago we are certain we saw a Regal Frit patrolling around one of the fields. We still haven’t seen one since.

Sunny and 62° as I started hiking at 9:15am and about 70° as I finished at 3:00pm. I reached the 3,280 foot craggy summit by about 10:30am and spent most of my time along the ridge just below the top. Western Whites were hilltopping along the ridge but butterfly activity in general was fairly light. The White-veined Arctic was a species I had hoped to find as I’ve seen them at this location before. This one made me work very hard to get close and for photos. The Labrador Sulphur was a first-time sighting for me, and counts for it and Palaeno are conservative as there were likely more. The Mormon Fritillary and two of the Mustard Whites were observed along the trail as I returned to the parking area, but all other sightings were above the treeline. I searched for but didn’t see Grizzled Skippers, which I had found midway down the trail in muddy spots on 6/12/2021.

areas surrounding Jamaica Bay, and the Rockaways
Queens County, NY
Coral Haistreaks freshly-out in at least 2 locations, incl. in Brooklyn (F.B. Field) but adjacent to Jamaica Bay, utilizing Orange Milkweed at that site, and going to var. dogbanes and other nectar-flowers at the Neponsit ‘barrens’ area. An E. Tailed-Blue was photo’d. with virtually no tails, despite otherwise an fresh [2nd-brood] look. Rather fresh-looking, but not photo’d. were Am. Coppers. A sole Variegated Fritillary played hard-to-photo at ‘egg marsh’ area by Jamaica Bay, a male in fresh & feisty condition. The Am. Lady and Common Buckeyes seen all appeared quite fresh, one Buckeye seemed to be ovipositing on some small plants in thick vegetation. Little Wood-Satyrs were easily the most-commonly seen species of the day, and in multiple locations. Delaware Skippers and Crossline Skipper appeared to be very freshly-out; probably rather less-so of a single Zabulon Skipper noted. Some additional/poss. species were seen too-quickly to make ID determinations, incl. some small dark skippers. Poison-Ivy was the most-regularly seen plant! Weather: hot by afternoon with full sun, temp. at shore cooler than midtown parts of city, with a southerly [on-shore] breeze for the afternoon. The most time was spent at the Neponsit area on the Rockaways. A bit of time was also taken to seek Salt-Marsh Skipper but none were noticed on this outing.

Hatcher Pass (61.77153° N, 149.30811° W)
Matanuska-Susitna Borough, AK
On the drive from Anchorage we had dense, low clouds and cool weather with occasional drizzle well past Palmer, so I was beginning to despair for good butterflying conditions. However, as we drove into the mountains toward Hatcher Pass we left the clouds below and came out into beautiful sunshine with occasional small puffy clouds and a light breeze. Temperatures were in the high fifties as I got started at 12:15pm and were in the high sixties as I finished at 4pm. I’ve uploaded lots of photos due to the trickiness with some of these IDs. Observations were between 3,000 to roughly 3,600 feet in elevation, all above the treeline. I started near the parking area below Independence Mine just before the ranger station and on the eastern slope overlooking the parking area, and then spent the rest of the afternoon along the south-facing slope of Skyscraper Mountain. Polixenes Arctic (Oeneis polixenes) and Theano Alpine (Erebia pawloskii) counts are conservative. For the Polixenes Arctics, I only counted those I successfully photographed but other likely individuals were observed. The Melissa Arctic (Oeneis melissa), Theano Alpines, and Mountain Fritillaries (Boloria alaskensis) were all first-time sightings for me (at least documented with photos in the case of the fritillaries, which were very common). No White-veined Arctics (Oeneis bore) were observed but maybe it’s still early for them at this location. A beautiful day in the mountains and wonderful alpine butterflying.

85 degrees, sunny. We walked along the edges of the new meadow created when pine trees cut due to beetle infestation for 20 minutes. We tried to check all the milkweed as some was was still blooming. There were less than 12 very tiny pieces of helitrope on the way in. We have never seen Juniper Hairstreak this late in the year, this is a FOS for us in GA.

Partly sunny 78degrees. A Question Mark visited milkweeds, but moved quickly I couldn’t take its picture. Had a Monarch, tiger swallowtail and Ruby-throated Hummingbird visiting all at the same time. An adventrous afternoon at certified butterfly garden #2490.

85 degrees, full sun. We were amazed at the buttonbush and thistle, fresh and in full bloom on Woody Pond Dam. There was also helitrope and clover. We also hiked the road opposite Goosepond where there is usually water but we are 12” behind on rain this year and there was no water but a little helitrope blooming. The fogfruit on Wildlife Drive in one spot where we usually see Little Metalmark and Phaon Crescent had been mowed too short but we found a little they missed and all the crescents on it. Unfortunately the fogfruit at Barbour River Landing was killed along with the bahaya grass except for a tiny bit so we found no crescents there yesterday.

Sunny with a light breeze and 70° from 6:15 to 7pm. Conservative counts but fewer Common Ringlets than last week at this location. I was glad this evening for close views of the Mormon Fritillaries that had eluded me and my camera last week. My wife was waiting patiently for me throughout, and as we were about to get in the car she heard movement among the trees across the road. We were happy to find a porcupine there, and watched it climb a large birch tree.

Sunny with temperature in the high sixties at about 3:55pm. I was working from home this afternoon and saw an orange butterfly flutter past the back deck. I hadn’t seen a fritillary in the yard or neighborhood before so ran outside with the camera. I found a Mormon Fritillary in the front yard and followed it a couple of houses down the block to get photos.

Trail to and including Lower Bigelow Lake in Oregon Caves Natl Monument
Josephine County, OR
This has been a delayed season for butterflies. There has been continued cool weather periodically this spring and early summer. This was a count for the monument in the lower section, the road and Lower Bigelow Lake. 3 other sections were also surveyed this same date by other groups. A Moss’s elfin was found at the meadow by Upper Bigelow Lake by one of the other groups, unusual this late in the year.

several preserves and protected natural areas, western portions of the county.

N. Metalmarks very freshly-out in several small sites, all highly-protected. A White-M Hairstreak appeared at one of these sites, but was not cooperative for photos. One Hoary Edge was the 1st butterfly sighting of the day, with host-plants for that species nearly abundant in the same site. [Note: the same metalmark species was seen a day or more previous, in northwest New Jersey, also in limited protected areas.
This species had a period of intensive focus in the state of Connecticut over a period of recent years.]

Mostly sunny and 72° with a light breeze from 5:50 to 6:40pm, and smoky haze and odor from distant wildfires. I walked north from the lagoon along the Coastal Trail a short ways. Butterfly activity was very light but it was nice to find a vibrant newly-eclosed Tortoiseshell.

Baxter Bog Park, Anchorage (61.18489° N, 149.75657° W)
Anchorage Municipality, AK
Sunny, breezy, and buggy at 70° from 6:10 to 7:30pm. I’ve been checking this bog near our house regularly for early signs of Dorcas Coppers, and found this evening that they’ve begun eclosing. I stomped around the bog in knee-high gumboots while mobbed by mosquitos to inspect the Shrubby Cinquefoil and found Dorcas Coppers in at least two areas on the east side of the bog (all males, I think). I saw Silver-bordered Fritillaries at both spots too, although they were mostly concentrated at about half the length of the bog. Conservative counts are given for all three species observed.
